JOU 3117- Print News Reporting

It all started last November. I was in the process of choosing my classes for the Spring term. I had an idea of the classes that I needed, I just choose the ones with the most convenient times for me. I stumbled upon Neil Reisner's option T/R 1:30 -3:25. The class description: Instruction in learning to ask relevant, appropriate and substantial questions for both print and broadcast on online media.

"That sounds alright," I thought. "It's important to learn what questions to ask an interviewee."

Come the first day of class, Professor Reisner drops the bomb and tells us that we will start our own paper covering Liberty City. I thought I was in for a smooth ride... just come to class, take some notes and go back home. I tried to picture myself actually going out to Liberty City and talking to the people. I must say, I was scared at first. I hadn't heard much about this city, but I did know, wasn't pleasant. My husband would tell me "You're gonna get shot!"

After a while, it sunk in. Now I believe this will be a great experience. I will be doing real reporting: finding stories, conducting interviews, making mistakes and learning from them. Not only that, but we could really make a difference in Liberty City and take away the bad image that has been created about this neighborhood.
